ghana

i just wrote a huge post yesterday but ghanain internet sucks so it got erased somehow. ill keep it shorter here.

so im writing this blog so i dont have to send out emails to people telling everyone what im up to separately. doesnt make sense to write the same thing over and over.

africa is crazy. ive never been such a minority before. at first it was terrifying because everyone looks at you. now im starting to get used to it a bit. i live in the whitest neighborhood in Accra. its called Osu and compared to the other parts of the city it is supposed to be wealthy. it still has garbage eveyrwhere, open sewers, lots of hawkers and no streetlights. even though its the whitest area i can walk for twentyfive minutes without seeing any other white person. so im a huge minority. ive finally started to perfect the look of being used to walking down the street with everyone staring at me, everyone shouting "obruni" (whitey) as i pass, every taxi i pass honking at me and there are a million taxis in this city, everyone asking me for money, or asking if i want a bracelet or a belt or an extension cord for cheap price. its crazy, im like a walking cash machine and a walking spectacle.

everything is sp cheap here. soooo cheap. i get a bowl of streetfood (rice meat and sauce) for 15cents for lunch. i eat huge pineapples on the street for 50 cents and the ladies cut them up nice for you. i take a taxi to work for a buck everyday. beer is a buck for a big forty.

i live in a house on a compound run by a woman named Auntie C. my roomates are all german and there are some dutch guys who live there too. nice people. im goign to the beach to sleep in a hammock for the weekend. very excited.

on sunday, teh Accra hearts soccer team played the Kotoko team. every time the hearts scored, everyone in the whole city would start screaming and yelling. ive never heard such a large cheer before. you could hear it from every part of the city.

anyway, things are crazy
